Two young Cubans lost their lives in a multiple vehicle collision that ended with the car they were traveling in catching fire on a highway in northeast Houston, Texas, on Saturday night. This tragedy has generated significant grief among their family members, friends, and others close to them.
The deceased in the tragic traffic accident have been identified as Pedro Mesa and Alfredo Ernesto Peña Ortiz, residents of the province of Granma, according to a post in the Facebook group "Somos de Campechuela."
The information posted by user Mike Torns included an official report of the traffic incident that occurred on Wallisville Road, near Greens Bayou and Highway 90, on Saturday, November 2, at around 7:30 p.m., involving four vehicles.
According to the information that has emerged, the two young Cubans were occupants of a gray 2007 Honda Accord and became trapped inside the vehicle when it caught fire following a multiple collision. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
A report published by the Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) indicated that the driver of the gray Honda Accord—whose identity was not disclosed—was heading east in lane number 1 of Wallisville Road but then veered out of their lane and occupied the dividing line between the east and westbound lanes.
As the Honda crossed the line dividing the lanes of the road, it collided with a Ram 1500 traveling west and began to spin.
The driver of a Chrysler Pacifica saw the vehicle spinning around and tried to dodge it, but was unsuccessful, leading to a collision with the Honda, which then also crashed into a Hyundai Sonata.
The Honda was engulfed in flames, and its occupants, the two young Cubans, were unable to escape the vehicle in time, losing their lives instantly.
The report indicated that the driver of the Hyundai Sonata, identified as Treveon Battist, was immediately transported to Ben Taub Hospital and showed signs of alcohol intoxication. The report also added that he was in possession of a firearm.
The other two drivers involved in the incident stayed at the scene and cooperated with the authorities' investigation, according to the police.
The fatal accident is being investigated by the Vehicle Crimes Division of the Harris County Sheriff's Office in Texas.
Neither the authorities nor the local media disclosed the names of the two deceased, whose identities have surfaced in social media posts mourning their tragic and untimely passing.
A Cuban identified as Cesarito Rodríguez posted a touching message on his Facebook profile expressing the deep grief of himself and his family over the loss of his cousin, Pedro Mesa.
"My brother, I can't believe you left so early, my bro, the Mesa, as you would joyfully call me. I pray that God wraps you in His holy glory and takes you to a beautiful place that you deserve. My family is completely in mourning today... I feel very sad. EDP my beloved cousin Pedro Mesa," were his heartfelt words.
Since the news broke, hundreds of people close to both young individuals have expressed great sorrow over their passing and extended their condolences to the two grieving families.
