A Cuban woman in Kentucky, known on TikTok as @maitebeauty84, shared a video that elicited laughs by showcasing the "treasure" she found in her own home. It turns out that her mother, who had just arrived from Cuba, left her a surprise in her cleaning drawer: two small pieces of soap wrapped in a little paper.
"Look over here… these are the things that happen when you bring your mom from Cuba," Maite begins, unable to contain her laughter. With astonishment and a touch of Cuban humor, she asks, "Can you explain to me why my mom is saving these little soap slivers?" The thing is, it's not just about soap; as she amusingly shares, her mom also saves nylon bags, rice pouches, and anything else she deems useful for reuse.
Comments from other Cubans came in quickly. One suggested to her, "Teach him," to which Maite replied playfully, "Of course, but it's a process." Another understood her perfectly: "100% Cuban," and she responded, "Cubans and our unique customs."
Other comments revealed a sense of nostalgia: “Recycling. That's what I did when I arrived... poor thing, she will eventually adapt. We bring a trauma,” wrote a user, to which Maite replied: “Of course, I know, we all went through that. We are such comedians.”
This video by Maite is a nod to those Cuban habits of "saving just in case" that many carry in their blood, even when thousands of kilometers away from the island. Because, which Cuban hasn't saved those little soap scraps or nylon bags?
What do you think?
