A man identified as Duley Basulto Gómez drowned while attempting to cross a river in the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo, Holguín, last Wednesday, and his body was found three days later.
The Facebook profile "Realidades desde Holguín," associated with the government, reported this Sunday on the tragic event that occurred on December 4th at around 8 a.m., when Basulto attempted to cross the river via the Zabala bridge in the El Jobo local council.
The man was swept away by the force of the water, in front of several community members who were "shouting at him to come back."
"A neighbor, in a heroic gesture, tried to rescue him, but it was not possible," as "a whirlpool created by the river as it descends into the ravine swept him away," a source told "Realidades desde Holguín."
According to the information, urgent notice was given to the authorities and the Ministry of the Interior (Minint) of the municipality, which immediately began the search alongside Basulto's family, rescue personnel from the Moa Fire Command 30, divers, rescuers, a boat from the company Pedro Sotto Alba, and activists from the Red Cross in Sagua de Tánamo.
The rescue operation remained active for three days, but unfortunately, on the morning of this Saturday, residents of the Cayo Acosta neighborhood in the neighboring municipality of Frank País "saw the body floating nearby and immediately alerted the authorities, who were able to retrieve it and transport it," so that it could be buried in the local cemetery.
The incident has caused great distress among family, friends, and residents in the community where the victim lived.
Throughout this year, numerous incidents have been reported of people who have lost their lives by drowning in rivers, beaches, or reservoirs in various provinces.
Just a month ago, Minint agents discovered the body of a 24-year-old man, an employee of the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant in Matanzas, floating in the sea near a location known as Playa del Inder. The young man had been reported missing days earlier after going out fishing.
Another man, identified as Enrique Tillán, 53 years old and a worker at the Renté thermoelectric plant, drowned at Siboney beach in Santiago de Cuba at the end of September.
