A man who worked as a custodian at the Prefabricated and Pre-mixed Company of Jovellanos, Matanzas, was tried for an alleged act of sabotage against the factory that took place a year ago.

The accused, whose name was not revealed to the media, was tried this week in the Room of Crimes Against State Security of the Provincial People's Court of Havana.

According to the newspaper Girón, the accused climbed over the perimeter wall of the factory and cut four cables that connected the board to the batching plant automated.

As a result, the production of construction materials in the industry was halted, which was scheduled to deliver prefabricated items to the Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) in a few days.

The attack resulted in financial losses estimated at over 174,000 pesos, a figure that included the costs of repairing the technology and the output that was not produced; the latter impacted the wages of the center's workers.

The Prosecutor's Office of Matanzas argued in its conclusions that such crimes have a high level of harm both for the Cuban economy and for families, due to their impact at various levels.

"It is urgent to take into account, furthermore, that this was carried out at a time when the country is engaged in a sustained struggle to revive the economy, facing resource shortages and a constant commitment to development in small and medium enclaves such as, for example, this industry located in Jovellanos," emphasized the prosecutor.

The Penal Code stipulates a penalty of seven to 15 years of imprisonment for anyone who knowingly destroys, alters, damages, or harms means, resources, buildings, systems, facilities, or socioeconomic or military units, thereby impeding or obstructing their normal functioning.

The trial has concluded for sentencing.
