The retired lieutenant of the Miami-Dade Police, Evelyn Fernández, was sentenced this Tuesday to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder and other charges related to a violent incident that occurred in October 2023 in the southwest part of the county.

Fernández, 53, admitted in a Florida court that he fired at his ex-partner, a retired Miami police officer, without injuring him, during a confrontation at the intersection of Southwest 282nd Street and 167th Avenue in Miami-Dade. Although he missed the shot, his vehicle was hit by several bullets. He then fled the scene and barricaded himself in another home, leading to a standoff with law enforcement that lasted over 14 hours.

As part of the agreement with the State Attorney's Office of the county, Fernández received a seven-year prison sentence, with credit for time already served, followed by 20 years of probation. The first two years will be under electronic monitoring via GPS, and he will be required to wear a SCRAM bracelet that monitors alcohol consumption. Additionally, he must attend a treatment program in Tennessee, continue therapy with a licensed psychiatrist, and adhere to his medication prescription.

The sentence also includes a restraining order that prohibits any contact with the victim and her children, and requires him to surrender all firearms in his possession.

The prosecution decided to withdraw the mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years that she originally faced, although it warned that if she violates the conditions of her parole, Fernández could be sentenced to life in prison. The victim gave her approval to the judicial agreement, as confirmed by the authorities.

This is not the first violent incident related to Fernández. In 2016, she was arrested on charges of theft and property damage linked to a dispute with her then-partner, former Miami-Dade County mayor Carlos Álvarez. On that occasion, the charges were dismissed after two months.

The case prompted a large police operation in October 2023, involving evacuations of residents and the mobilization of special units from the Miami-Dade Police Department. Deputy Chief Rosanna Cordero Stutz stated at the time that the former officer alternated between moments of cooperation and episodes of resistance, complicating her arrest.
