Rumors regarding the health status of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, have intensified in recent weeks, despite the White House and his own team’s efforts to assure calm.
At 79 years old, the leader is facing increased public scrutiny following several appearances where he has been seen with bruises on his hands, swelling in his legs, and visible signs of fatigue.
Trump reappeared this weekend at his golf course in Sterling, Virginia, after three consecutive days of activity at the facility. The visit was seen as an effort to demonstrate his active status amid questions about his physical condition.
On social media, however, comments multiplied regarding recent images showing a large dark spot on the back of her right hand during a meeting with the President of South Korea, Lee Jae-myung, on August 25.
The president reacted with a message on his Truth Social network: “I’VE NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE.” The statement was not enough to stop the speculation, which was further fueled by earlier photographs showing swollen ankles and bruises on both hands.
A confirmed diagnosis and new uncertainties
In July, the White House acknowledged that Trump suffers from chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition in older individuals that complicates the return of blood from the legs to the heart.
The report, signed by his personal physician Sean Barbabella, stated that it is a “benign and common” condition and ruled out more serious pathologies such as thrombosis, heart failure, or kidney issues.
The document itself acknowledged that “recent photos of the president have shown minor bruises on the back of his hand,” attributed to regular use of aspirin and frequent handshakes.
That explanation has not convinced all specialists. In consultations with La Vanguardia, doctors from Spanish hospitals suggested possible bruises resulting from a recent venipuncture, skin changes typical of age —such as senile purpura— or even an ochre dermatitis due to iron accumulation in the skin.
Although experts agree that these spots do not affect the functionality of the hands and are more of an aesthetic nature, the lack of official information regarding the origin of the most visible spot has kept conjectures alive.
The political debate
Rumors about the president's health have resonated strongly in the political debate. During the 2024 campaign, both Democrats and even his Republican rival Nikki Haley questioned his age and physical stamina. Haley's own campaign released an ad titled “Grumpy Old Men”, portraying both Joe Biden and Trump as older and vulnerable leaders.
The topic has returned to the center of discussion amid recent episodes that fueled doubts. Newsweek reported that Trump posted on social media a photo of him playing golf with former coach Jon Gruden, but the image had been taken a week earlier. For some critics, this was an attempt to conceal a possible public absence due to health reasons.
In contrast, the vice president JD Vance has come to the defense of his boss. In an interview with , he claimed that Trump has “incredible energy” and that he continues to be the first to start working every morning and the last to make calls at the end of the day. “I feel very confident that he will complete his term and accomplish great things for the American people,” he stated.
What’s coming
Trump's immediate future seems to depend on his ability to project strength and dispel rumors. Doctors consulted by various media insist that the spots and bruises are not a serious risk and that their development will depend on whether they are temporary bruises or age-related skin changes.
However, the images continue to fuel headlines and speculation in a context where the U.S. president faces a second term with significant internal and external challenges.
For now, Trump insists that he is in excellent shape. However, doubts persist, and all indications suggest that his health will continue to be scrutinized by the media, political opponents, and citizens in a country where the age and physical stamina of the president have become a central issue in public debate.
