National passenger trains continue to operate in Cuba despite the massive blackout that has been affecting the country since Wednesday morning.

The information was confirmed by the Facebook page Rutas Nacionales, which published a notice stating that "despite the failure of the National Electric System (SEN), the rail service remains active on all scheduled routes" thanks to the "commitment of the operational staff."

The message emphasizes that the trains will continue to operate normally and that any changes will be communicated through official channels.

The statement adds to the note issued by the Cuban Company of Airports and Airport Services S.A. (ECASA), which also assured the operation of all airports thanks to the use of alternative means.

"All operational airports in Cuba will utilize the alternative means available at airport facilities to ensure the departure and arrival of airlines and passengers," emphasized the brief statement.

The Minister of Transport, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, stated on Facebook that, despite the blackout in Cuba, passenger transport between Gerona and Batabanó is being maintained through the ferry Perseverancia, with the next departure scheduled for this Thursday, September 11, at the usual time.

The official added that the continuity of the planned unloading activities at the ports of Havana, Vita, Carúpano, Santiago de Cuba, and Cienfuegos is guaranteed for ships transporting products destined for the country, including those for the regulated basic basket.

He also stated that port operations maintain their stability with the participation of Empresa Navegación Caribe, Prácticos de Cuba, and the Consignataria MAMBISA.

However, while the official discourse conveys normality in strategic services related to transportation and commerce, the population is facing the paralysis of the national electric system, with its direct consequences in households: food at risk, lack of water, and interrupted basic services.

In this context, the Cuban Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, asserted that the government has a well-defined strategy to address the total collapse of the SEN –but not to prevent it–, which occurred in the morning following the unexpected shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant in Matanzas.
