A 25-year-old Cuban man died and eight others were injured on Tuesday in a traffic accident that occurred on Route 7 in the Uruguayan department of Canelones.
The accident occurred around 8:20 in the morning, at kilometer 82 of the route, when a car traveling south collided with a van traveling in the opposite direction that was attempting to turn left, reported the Highway Police, as stated by the local press.
The 25-year-old driver of the car, the sole occupant, sustained minor injuries, and the alcohol test showed a result of zero.
Ten people were traveling in the van, nine of whom were Cuban nationals, aged between 20 and 35 years. The driver, a 58-year-old Uruguayan, was unharmed and also tested negative for alcohol.
Among the passengers, a young Cuban lost his life at the scene of the accident; another suffered serious injuries, and seven others sustained minor injuries, according to confirmation from the highway patrol.
The injured were transferred to health centers in the area.
The route remained partially blocked for several hours, while authorities directed traffic through a single lane and conducted investigations to determine the exact causes of the incident.
