The Cuban visual artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara will present his latest performance, Another Treaty of Paris, next Wednesday, January 24, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, where he will unveil the personal testament of Fidel Castro.
According to Diario de Cuba, the performance recreates a supposed dream of Otero, in which the Cuban president showed him where he had hidden the document reflecting his last will. And the hiding place was none other than a Havana Club bottle.
The creator hopes that all Cubans, wherever they may be, will witness the event. For this reason, the work will have the special feature of being viewable live on the Internet. The curation is handled by Catherine Sicot from Elegoa Cultural Productions.
The interpretation of the Cuban artist is included in a collective international exhibition called The Nation and Its Fictions, where other artists will showcase their personal visions of their countries. The event will last for a week.
When asked about the possibility that the Cuban authorities might not allow him to travel to France, Otero asserts that everything is ready for the presentation regardless.
"If I can't be there, the work will still go on; if I'm not allowed to travel, I won't just sit idle at the airport," he clarified.
Otero Alcántara has been arrested and threatened by the State Security of Cuba due to his critical stance on the lack of freedom of expression in the artistic realm. Last December, he was arrested while pilgrimageing with a friend to the National Sanctuary of San Lázaro, where he wanted to ask the saint for the freedom of Cuba.
