A group of young women from Las Tunas have joined the Military Service in order to take advantage of the option known as Order 18 and later study at the University of Medical Sciences.
A report by Periódico 26 showcases the stories of 12 young individuals from nearly all over the province, who are undergoing basic training in a unit of the Military Region in that territory.
"Almost all of them agree on their professional future: to study Medicine or Dentistry," the publication explains.
Girls like Gréthel Irene Ricardo Salina from Puerto Padre, or Libia Mariannis Rodríguez Chacón from the municipality of Colombia, say they decided to join the Army as it was their only option for accessing higher education.
Isbet Viamonte Monteagudo also shares this opinion; she had to convince her parents that this was the only viable path for her, as she wanted to change her major.
Order 18 is an option offered by the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) since 1984 for soldiers who are undergoing Military Service and are interested in pursuing higher education, provided they have completed their secondary education.
In the case of women (who do not have military obligations to the country), the opportunity to study at the university constitutes the main incentive for voluntarily engaging in this stage of military preparation.
