Cubans in the Minors: Cortés wins in Triple-A, Tomás hits a home run

A total of 30 Cubans appeared on Friday in the minor leagues.

Yasmany Tomás had another solid night with the Reno Aces, Triple-A branch of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The man from the capital hit his first homer of 2019 and confirmed his status as a power hitter who aspires to return to the Major Leagues.

Nestor Cortés Jr. starred in a remarkable opening that led him to his first win of the year. The left-hander who came to MLB in 2018 with the Orioles and was returned to the Yankees through the Rule 5 Draft. Cortés based his success on the variation in speed:

A total of 30 Cubans saw action in the minors this Friday from Triple-A to Middle Class-A. Guantanamo's Luis Romero debuted in Triple-A and Yadiel Hernánde was unstoppable as a pinch-hitter.

In Double-A, the night was weak offensively, only Omar Estévez continued his pace that already seems to be dominating the minor league level. Yadier Álvarez did not stand up in his opening, Norge Luis Ruiz took over without any setbacks and Dayron Blanco, Alfredo Rodríguez, Roberto Baldoquín and Jorge Oña scored the card.

In advanced Class-A, Víctor Víctor Mesa went 0-for-3, and now has seven at-bats without a hit, Daysbel Hernández from Pinar del Río won in a relief role with two strikeouts in two innings and the indomitable Yoel Yanqui continues his pace in volume of extra-base hits, this time he doubled and tripled and his average rests at .429. Artemiseño Diosbel Arias had a multi-hit night.

Finally, in Class-A medium, Vargas's son, Miguel, hit an unstoppable hit, Edgar Escobar from Granma made his debut and all the brilliance went to Lester Madden. The capital native signed by Oakland in December 2018 has lit up in his 9-5 debut, last night he hit a triple and drove in two, now his average rests at .556.
