Franny Cobos from Ciego de Avilasigned in the summer of 2017 with the Houston Astros for a bonus of 125 thousand dollars. Three years later, the 19-year-old prospect is looking to establish himself in Minor League baseball.
Cobos has gone through hard and sad times, especially in the winters. Far from his family and without a salary that allows him complete economic security since Minor League players earn below-average stipends.
However, the 5.9 young man and Under-15 World Champion with Cuba in 2016 continues his march at Fitteam Palm Beaches, the Astros' training home.
"Last season was one of the best I've had in my career. It went pretty well for me," Cobos toldCyberCuba.
Cobos was one of Cuba's brightest prospects as a hitter. Once in the Dominican Republic, scouts became interested in his tools as a pitcher and he had to leave behind what he probably liked most in the game.
"My dream was always to hit, but they signed me as a pitcher. However, I have the thought that one day I can do both," he added.
His numbers in two professional campaigns have been notable. In 2019 he reached the short Class-A level and averages 1.10 with a 4-3 record between 2018 and 2019. His main goal in 2020 is to approach or touch the strong advanced Class-A level.
Despite being an underrated type, due to his height and surely the amount of the bonus he signed, Cobos has demonstrated that he has the skills within baseball to overcome any barrier.
