I am among those offended by how this case has been handled. The official statement does not clarify the means by which he arrived at the Calixto García hospital. Anyone could interpret it as a voluntary action, and it does not mention that it was the State Security who took him from his home when they deemed it appropriate, as only they determine who comes and goes from this man's house, even though he supposedly is a free citizen.
The shocking medical report only serves to tarnish the scientific reputation of Cuban doctors.
Hemoglobin at 16 is mentioned as a sign of good nutrition, when, in this case, it is more indicative of hemoconcentration due to dehydration. With less circulating fluid, the Hb becomes concentrated, leading to a falsely elevated result.
pH at 7.15, they do not mention the bicarbonate level, they chose not to specify what it was. There are clear signs of metabolic acidosis in their case due to prolonged fasting.
She must have been in a significant state of ketosis. This is not achieved with just one day of fasting, as they insist on emphasizing that she was indeed eating. A respectable doctor knows that a pH of 7.15 indicates a serious condition. The conclusion from the NTV report, which stated that everything suggested her clinical state was not compatible with the hemo-chemical findings and that she was eating, is unreasonable.
What a shame for a doctor to have written such a thing. Clearly, they set aside their dignity and knowledge to please the ears of the State Security executioners, and that is when they expose such medical barbarities.
They are enraged that they couldn't portray Luis Manuel secretly feeding himself; instead, what they have managed to show are clear signs of starvation, not from one or two days of deterioration, but from several.
They are so foolish that by providing so many details about the results of the additional tests conducted, what they made those familiar with the topic understand was that this man had been standing for days without eating a bite.
Most likely, because I know "my people," they hydrated him in the ambulance and administered hypertonic glucose to show a man who was wandering around. A doctor who saw the report knows he was wandering, but with difficulty, and his face, with sunken eyes, was a clear indication of dehydration.
What matters is that this young man survives, because unfortunately, we Cubans lack the "guts" to confront the regime just as he does.
I am a doctor. Please do not publish my name. I still don’t have the courage of this guy to say what I think without hiding.
