Missing Cuban mother who broadcast protests and arrests in Nuevitas

The people of Nuevitas spent two consecutive days protesting in the streets against the government's mismanagement of the current energy crisis and on the second night there was strong police repression.

The Cuban mother Mayelín Rodríguez Prado, known on social networks as “La Chamaca” was arrested by the political police for sharing videos on Facebook showing the protests in Nuevitas, Camagüey.

"Since 9:00 pm we have lost direct communication with Mayelín Rodríguez Prado “La Chamaca” (21 years old), who has broadcast the Nuevitas protests live. As we have learned from contacts with relatives, there is a possibility that he is in detention," said the non-governmental organization. Justice 11J.

Rodríguez was arrested on Saturday night and as of the time of publishing this note, her whereabouts are unknown.

"Mayelín Rodríguez remains missing. Her family still has no official information about her status and whereabouts. Mayelín is the mother of a 1 and a half year old girl. We urgently call on human rights NGOs to amplify this concern and demand her immediate appearance," Justice 11J said this Sunday.

Protests in Nuevitas against blackouts and government mismanagement began Thursday night. The residents of the Pastelillo neighborhood came out to the streets to demand "Freedom" and they swept through the entire town to the rhythm of conga "Pongan lacurrent pinga" and slogans like "Díaz-Canel singao the people are planted".

On Friday, peaceful protests were repeated, but the Cuban police deployed their forces in Nuevitas and arrested several protesters. The arrests were violent and the security forces even beat girls who were with their families at the protest.

On Saturday, the first reports of the presence of State Security forces and the Police in Nuevitas arrived and indicated that they began persecuting participants in the protests against the blackouts.

Among the people who reported harassment by uniformed officers of the Technical Investigation Department (DTI) was "La Chamaca."

"Two women from the DTI just came to summon me to State Security," said the young woman. In his last publication on social networks he noted: "I need us to unite now more than ever. Don't leave Camagüey alone, this could end badly."
