The Cuban government is promoting another project to solve the shortage of meat and eggs: thesemi-rustic chicken breeding in the Holy Spirit

The Breeding Hen Farm of the Cabaiguán Base Business Unit was recognized by the newspaperEscambray for its results in raising birds to guarantee food to residents of the Turquino Plan, impoverished communities in the mountains of Cuba, specifically in this case those in the center of the island.

The Business Unit is called by the government tomeet the demand for food not only for rural communities, but also for "producers and entities linked to the territorial self-sufficiency program."

The farm is located in the Agua Fría area, in Fomento. It currently has about 4,000 breeding female hens and about 400 males. It has eight warehouses, four are for starting breeding and the rest for the breeding stock.

Thesemi-rustic chickens They are a cross between Creoles and Rhode Island. This resulting species adapts well to the Cuban climate, they are resistant and according toEcured, are a good alternative for developing countries because it favors egg production.

The state company allocates a number of birds for sale to the population with the aim of promoting backyard breeding. However, there is no animal feed to feed them, so few breeders will be able to achieve the performance that these animals could have in another context.

In 2022 the farm delivered more than 30,000 chickens. Between January and February 2023, they have sold 3,700 for local development and self-sufficiency programs.

These results are insignificant if they are evaluated against the demand for meat and eggs that exists at the municipal and provincial level in Sancti Spíritus or in any other Cuban province.

The true intention of the regime is to reiterate thecalled to raise chickens in the yards, so that Cubans themselves guarantee the consumption of eggs and meat, in a scenario of unprecedented shortages.

They have been doing this type of reports in the official press since October 2022, when they announced that therustic chicken farming They would be the solution to the lack of food in Las Tunas.

A month later they said that theraising Creole pigs and rustic chickens It would be the solution to the shortage of meat and eggs in Holguín.

At the beginning of 2023 they repeated the same message, but from Villa Clara. The Cuban vice presidentSalvador Valdes Mesa personally controlled therustic chicken breeding program on a weekend visit to the territory.

In the same month of January, Sancti Spíritus announced that it was promoting theraising semi-rustic chickens and quails to make up for the shortage of eggs. They claimed that they produced an average of 8,500 eggs per day.
