The bell#LaBanderaEsDeTodos, released after the visual artistLuis Manuel Otero Alcántara was arrested for presenting his performance with the flag at the Museum of Dissidence in 2019, he gained strength in recent days in support of the leader of the San Isidro Movement.
"Almost four years after this performative gesture and a year and eight months after the unjust imprisonment of Otero Alcántara, I invite you to return to the hashtag that at the time flooded social networks. With this campaign I intend for anyone who wishes to upload their photograph with the flag doing any daily work," he announced this Monday inFacebook the cuban activistHector Luis Valdes Cocho.
The action called by Valdés Cocho invites us to "wear the flag as our second skin", placing it as a stole or however the Cuban wishes, using as a caption the hashtag created for the challenge (#LaBanderaEsDeTodos).
Dozens of Cubans joined the initiative that calls for "reclaiming the flag, removing it from its status as the sole property of the State and from the uses that the ruling party had reserved for it," to express support for Otero Alcántara, sentenced to five years in prison for alleged acts of outrage against the symbols of the country, contempt, defamation of institutions and organizations and of heroes and martyrs, among others.
"Luis Ma's performance should not necessarily be recreated, but with this gesture we demonstrate that we can wear the flag as our second skin. Art cannot continue to be criminalized, nor its exponents imprisoned," added Valdés Cocho.
The Havana Court that convicted Otero Alcántara argued that he had the "express intention" of offending the national flag through the performance"Flag", where the artist wears the Cuban flag as a second skin for twenty-four hours for a month. The ruling came after the approval of the bill that"protects national symbols".
The challenge#LaBanderaEsDeTodos It was launched by the San Isidro Movement, based in Old Havana, after the arrest of the Cuban artist for presenting his performance with the flag at the Museum of Dissidence.
Many Cubans, residents inside and outside the island, joined thechallenge and shared creative images next to the flag.
