From January to April, more than 3,000 traffic accidents were recorded in the country, 243deceased and more than 2,300injuredThe National Road Safety Commission reported this Wednesday, through the officialACN.

Among the main causes of these accidents are the violation of the right of way, lack of attention to vehicle control, technical defects, excessive speed and driving while ingesting alcoholic beverages, the working group pointed out to the aforementioned media.

The data revealed that in 419 of these events there was at least one victim and that in 89% of the cases drivers and pedestrians were responsible for the incidents, which left 48 dead and 383 injured, in addition to material damage.

The Commission detailed that between 12 noon and six in the afternoon most of the accidents occurred and that Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays were the most affected days. Above all, on Sundays, considered the most lethal, since it reports one death every eight accidents.

The majority of accidents that occurred in the first four months of 2023 were due to the collision of moving vehicles, and only 7.2% of these events occurred due to the poor condition of the roads, a percentage that is questionable, if taken into account. There are numerous complaints about the condition of the island's roads, without new investments or maintenance for a long time due to the country's economic crisis.

The information highlighted that the ages with the highest reported victims are 46 to 55 years old and 31 to 35 years old.

In this quarter, the provinces with the highest number of accidents were Havana (266), Holguín (63), Villa Clara (50), Santiago de Cuba (47) and Camagüey (40).

The highest reports of deaths were from Cienfuegos, Havana and Holguín. Matanzas was the most dangerous province since it recorded an average of one death for every three crashes.

In April, Cienfuegos, Artemisa and Holguín were the only territories that increased the number of incidents, while Guantánamo maintained similar behavior.

At the beginning of May, the analyst of the Specialized Traffic Body of the General Directorate of the National Revolutionary Police, First Lieutenant Ayled Borges, reported thatmore than 200 people died in Cubaas a result of traffic accidents in the first four months of the year.

He said one in five people involved in traffic accidents had died.

The figure, however, represents a decrease in the number of deaths due to accidents compared to the same period of the previous year, said Borges, quoted by the official radio station.Radio Rebelde.

He stressed that the maincauses of accidents They are the violation of the right of way, not paying due attention, excessive speed, and technical defects of the vehicles.

94% of incidents are the responsibility of the human factor, he also stressed.

Likewise, 35% of the accidents reported from January 1 to April 30 involved moped vehicles.

Cuba closed 2022 with9,848 traffic accidents between January and December, a figure that represented a record compared to previous years.

The accidents in that period left a toll of 700 dead, almost two a day; Of them, 68 were minors. Additionally, 7,547 people were injured.

The number of accidents was almost 1,500 more than in 2021, when 8,369 road incidents occurred in the country, with a regrettable balance of 589 deaths.
