Díaz-Canel admits that Cuba will not achieve the 3.5 million tourists expected for this year

The governor Miguel Diaz-Canel He has already admitted that Cuba will not achieve the 3.5 million international tourists it hoped to receive this year, a hard blow to attempts to alleviate the economic crisis, but at the same time, a reality that does not surprise anyone.

Last week, at close the 10th Legislature of the National Assembly, the president pointed out that the recovery of the tourism industry continues to be impacted by the inclusion of Cuba on the list of countries sponsoring terrorism by the United States government, and by other issues related to logistics, fuel and energy.

"It will not achieve the 3.5 million visitors projected for the year, but it shows a growth rate that should exceed all 2021-2022 indicators, thanks to the recovery of the Cuba destination in stable sending countries during the pre-pandemic stage," he said.

So far this year, the country has received 1,309,000 international visitors, which was 20 percent below expectations. The figure represents only the 51 percent of what was registered in the same period in 2019.

As Alejandro Gil Fernández, Minister of Economy and Planning, detailed to the deputies, the forecast for daily tourists was met and so far the planned levels of income in foreign currency have been reached, he stated. Rebel Youth.

Regarding national tourism, 2,922,000 tourists were received per day and it is expected to reach the plan of 7,654,000 tourists per day during the year.

The Cuban government expected to receive some 3.5 million international visitors in 2023, the sector fails to take off after the paralysis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Until the beginning of May, there were a million tourists arrived in the country, of the almost 1.2 million that they should have received by then, as reported by Minister Juan Carlos García Granda at the International Tourism Fair, FITCuba 2023.
