An elderly Cuban couple is living hell in theCouncil Tower South, building where they live inMiami Beach because they have been without air conditioning for more than four weeks. The building is located on Fifth Street and Collins Avenue, in South Beach.
Two Cuban grandparents denounced that the owners of the property only hold them back. They have been told that they are missing a part to repair the system and that they have to continue waiting.
“We feel abandoned, they have no compassion or take into account that we are elderly people. I have hip surgery, I have a pacemaker […] I can't be without air and everything is patience and more patience. They will wait for the day we die so that patience runs out,” Mireya Girón complained in statements toAmerica Camel.
“With this situation we feel very bad,” reiterated her husband, who taughtThe building administration provided a fan for each of the building's 125 apartments and placed others in the hallways., something that does not solve the problem in a construction that is configured to have central air conditioning.
They were advised to go to a hotel or relatives' homes while they solved the air problem.
The vice mayor of Miami Beach, Michael Góngora, reported that last week, after visiting the building and observing the conditions in which the residents were, he contacted the owners of the property and they responded that they would solve the problem.
Góngora assures that the owners are now telling the city authorities that everything is working, but it is not, which implies that perhaps everything will lead to a sanction for the building owners to pressure them to solve the problem.
The property is managed by EHDOC, a nonprofit corporation that manages adult housing.
