The Cuban government has asked to avoid crowds in the face of a possible increase in COVID and other respiratory diseases, and called on the population to resume the preventive hygienic-sanitary measures adopted during the pandemic.

Carilda Peña García, deputy head of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), informed the press that despite the rebound of these ailments in various parts of the world, it has not happened in Cuba, but this should not call for confidence.

The expert pointed out that you must wash your hands and sanitize surfaces, avoid crowds of people, and wear a mask if you are susceptible to these viruses and must go to a place with many people. Additionally, anyone who has respiratory symptoms should not go to work or school, but rather to the hospital.

Peña García reported that in December in the country there was a decrease in medical care for acute respiratory infections (ARI) -including COVID- compared to the same period in 2022.

In the first week of 2024, this behavior remains the same, downward.

The vice minister explained that in 2023 no deaths from coronavirus were reported and the number of serious cases in intensive care decreased.

He also detailed that clinical-epidemiological, microbiological and genomic surveillance (the latter aimed at detecting SARS-CoV-2 variants circulating on the Island) has not detected any new variants so far.

"Omicron with its subvariants continues to circulate in Cuba, so until now nothing makes us think that a worsening of the symptoms due to COVID-19 will occur," he stressed.

However, he warned that individual protection measures must be maintained - such as having the anti-COVID vaccination schedule updated - and sanitary hygiene measures, as well as going to the doctor immediately if any respiratory symptoms occur.
