Several Cubans, who join a list of 300 people waiting for their travel permits to the United States, sent their stories to the television channelTelemundo 51 about this desperate wait.
The Cubans, already beneficiaries of humanitarian parole, confirmed to the television station that they have been trapped for weeks without being able to leave the island, due to the delay in the issuance of their travel permits.
According to their statements, the necessary documents have not yet arrived despite numerous attempts and calls from their sponsors to CBP (Customs and Border Protection) or USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services).
“I was approved on January 29, 2024 and we took a traveling group, my husband and I. Of that travel group, only my husband was approved, I am still waiting for my travel authorization,” said one of those affected.
Another person added that she is still waiting for a travel permit and that her husband had to leave because his permit was going to expire.
The lawyerRosaly Chaviano, contacted by those affected, listed three elements that people in this situation share: confirmation of their status as beneficiaries of humanitarian parole, the delay in issuance of travel permits, and frustration at the lack of clear answers.
HeUndersecretary of National Security Blas Nuñez-Neto He requested the list with the 300 people and their respective case numbers to be analyzed and determine their situation.
According toTelemundo “Those affected have complied with this requirement and are now eagerly awaiting a response that will allow the situation to be unblocked and allow them to finally reunite with their families in the United States.”
In 2023,Thanks to the humanitarian parole, more than 67,000 Cubans arrived in the United States, according to updated statistics from the United States Department of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
In general, until the end of December, 327,000 migrants, including Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans, arrived legally to the United States, within the framework of parole.
In the midst of an unprecedented migration crisis in recent years, thefiscal year 2023 closed with 200,287 applications from Cubans before the US immigration authorities, barely 24 thousand less than the previous period, when they crossed the borders224,607 migrants of the island.
The approval of the travel permit is not an endorsement for the automatic delivery of the parole upon appearing before the CBP authorities, who have the power to grant entry to the country.
