Matanzas authorities are investigating the spill of a toxic substance in Cárdenas Bay, with possible implications for the environment in the area.
The spill of a dark-colored substance was reported this Monday. The official press said that it is "remnants of ballast from a disused tank located on the Cardenas coast."
Local authorities, the police, Cupet specialists, CITMA, Civil Defense and directors of the Port of Matanzas appeared at the scene of the accident.
The first decision was to cut off the flow of the waste with a large deposit of earth in the area where the liquid was spilled inside the bucket, to prevent it from continuing to spill into the sea.
Specialists took samples of the substance to investigate it, determine its degree of toxicity and the possible environmental damage that this spill would cause if it was not stopped in time.
To date, the regime has not confirmedWhat substance has been spilled?, why the dumping occurred, nor the effects it could leave on the ecosystem.
It is not the first time that in theCardenas Bay spills of this type occur. In 2021 there was a fuel spill that endangered the quality of the waters in Varadero, but the regime managed to control the situation in time.
In 2023 the situation was repeated with adumping of residual honeycarried out by the state company Cuba Ron S.A. of the old Arechabala factory, in Playa Larga.
