A Cuban who participates in the war in Ukraine as a mercenary recruited by the Russian army He sent a message to his companions urging them to hand over their weapons because he assured that many of his friends have already died in the conflict. and that Russia is not complying with what was agreed upon.
“This is a message for all Cuban soldiers who are here in Ukraine. I've been here in the war for a while now and I'm going to tell you that they are scamming us of all our money. They are not paying us. Many of my friends have died in combat and they don't really pay us”, he denounced.
The Cuban, who appeared with his face covered in a video initially published by the influencer Alain Paparazzi Cuban, denounced that they were being “scammed.”
“Many of my friends died on the front lines without documents. They don't want to give us the documents, they are scamming us of our money. The sacrifice we are here for. They really aren't doing things right. They continue to scam us, they continue to deceive us. “We keep dying,” he reiterated.
In the final segment of his message, the Cuban urged other Cubans who are in the war like him to hand over their weapons.
“For all my Cuban colleagues who are in combat like me, do not let them continue to deceive you. Don't take up arms, do things well and we will continue doing things well. "Do not lose your life in vain.", he stressed.
“Keep doing your job, but hand over your weapons. What I mean by doing your job is to stay where you are, but don't take up your weapons. Hand over your weapons, we are really dying and no one is being paid what was promised. The decision is up to each person, but I prefer that they send me to Moscow and not lose my life and that my family not receive any money," he concluded.
The attitude of this Cuban mercenary contrasts with those of others who suggest that they feel proud to participate in the conflict.
In recent days a video was released that showed two Cubans fully equipped for war pronounce a few words of tribute shortly before firing a burst of shots in the air to remember their compatriots who died in that war.
“This is for our loved ones, the Cubans,” one of them was heard saying in the video.
“This is a tribute that we are paying to our fallen brothers. We want to demonstrate how we Cubans say goodbye to men, we say goodbye to men,” said the other and then added: “Hurrah! They will not pass, may God have them in Glory,” while the other asked his companions who are still alive to take care of themselves.
The exact number of Cuban mercenaries participating in the war in Ukraine is not clear. It is believed that between 400 and 3,000 Cubans have joined Vladimir Putin's army as mercenaries.
In mid-March, the Ukrainian government denounced the growing presence of Cuban soldiers in the war at a press conference held in kyiv. "We see photographs, videos from the Russian side where many mercenaries from Cuba are seen," said then the press chief of the Ukrainian Committee for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Petro Yatsenko.
In that occasion The official reproached the Cuban government for tolerance in the face of Russia's recruitment of people from the island, despite reports that many are deceived and have died on the front.
"We cannot affirm that it is a (Cuban) state program, but we know that no one (in Cuba) opposes it," he declared; and criticized that "Russian agitators" work without restrictions in Cuba.
Present at that same press conference were eight prisoners of war from Cuba, Nepal, Somalia and Sierra Leone captured by Ukrainian troops while fighting with Russian forces.
Petro Yatsenko, of the Ukrainian authority that deals with prisoners of war, said that Ukraine is open to negotiating the return of these fighters to their countries of origin.
So far there are no official figures of Cuban mercenaries killed in the invasion. It is the social media profiles of relatives and friends of the deceased that have gradually revealed the deaths.
The Cuban government has also not said anything about these deaths. In fact, Vice Chancellor Carlos Fernández de Cossío even lied to the network CBS by saying that it was Cuba that brought this recruitment to public light, when it was a complaint leaked in August 2023 by Cuban teenagers Alex Vega and Andorf Velázquez which uncovered the participation of Cubans in the Ukrainian war as mercenaries.
