Enrique Lucero Vazquez, municipal director of migrant care at the Tijuana City Council, highlights the importance of patience for applicants.

"It may arrive in a few days or even in four or five months," said Lucero Vázquez. He also warned that the application of United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the only "orderly, safe and regular way to enter" the country.

In March, the United States government announcedchanges to the CBP One application that could affect thousands of migrants seeking to enter the North American territory legally and safely.

The updates to the mobile app were intended to streamline the process for scheduling appointments at land ports of entry. They included the restriction of hours to carry out the procedure, limited from 12 p.m. until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

In addition, they imposed a rule that requires members of the same travel group to share a common destination address in the United States.

Appointment assignments will be made from 12:00 p.m. the next day, with a 23-hour window to confirm through a geolocation verification. This process includes life verification and photo capture, crucial elements to ensure the authenticity of applicants.

Theauthorized entry points to file asylum claims include locations in Texas, California and Arizona, with the land ports of Tijuana and Matamoros reporting the highest numbers of asylum claim cases with CBP One appointments received.

According to CBP in2023 more than 153,000 Cubans entered US territory irregularly. In two years, the figure rises to more than 533,000 people born on the island who settled in the United States, which is equivalent to 4.8% of the 11.1 million inhabitants.
