The president of the government of Spain,Pedro Sanchez, announced this Monday his decision to continue leading the country.
"I have decided to continue, with more force if possible. It is not a point and followed. It is a point and apart. I will work harder at the head of the presidency," Sánchez said.
Last week, inopen letter to citizens, Sánchez announced his temporary retirement from public life to reflect on his political future and make the decision on whether or not he should resign.
This is an unprecedented gesture in modern Spanish politics. Sánchez is facing a leadership crisis and has used this scenario to draw attention and ask for changes without specifying what the direction of his new political stage will be.
The politician assures that his family, particularly his wife, suffer harassment from the media and opponents since he has been in office.
Begoña Gómez, Sánchez's wife, has received accusations of corruption and influence peddling.
Pedro Sánchez's decision has not surprised many Spaniards who claim this pause in recent days was a political strategy to divert attention from certain issues that affect his management.
"Let's show how democracy is defended," were the president's final words, after announcing that he will not resign.
