A Cuban identified as José Oliva was arrested in the city of Hialeah for the theft of a sedan-type car whose owner was sleeping in the passenger seat.

The incident occurred last Monday at 1:30 in the morning, when the 46-year-old man first tried to steal a man's 2024 Honda Pilot SUV at the Victoria gas station, located at 385 Hialeah Drive.

The police said that Oliva took advantage of the moment when the owner of the car was paying for gas, who upon realizing "immediately ran out and confronted" the thief, "who was already sitting inside his vehicle trying to leave," the report details. police, quoted by the media Local 10.

The information states that the victim grabbed Oliva, pulled him out of the SUV and they both struggled, but the criminal pulled out a gun and pointed it at him.

Fearing for his life, the owner of the SUV backed up and went to the back of the car in the hope that Oliva would leave the scene, but that was not the case, instead he tried to enter the vehicle again and the two fought again.

Finally Oliva walked away and entered a Chevrolet Malibu that was parked at the gas station, but to his surprise, the owner was sleeping in the passenger seat.

Nonetheless the thief fled in the car with the owner of the car still asleep inside.

This victim later returned to the gas station and reported to police that Oliva had driven to the Star Motel, located at 1651 W. Okeechobee Road.

The agents arrived at that address and detained the Cuban around 7:00 p.m.

Oliva had committed an armed carjacking in the city less than two weeks earlier, on the afternoon of April 18.

That day he had stolen a man's truck in Hialeah Gardens.

Police say this man has spent several stints in state prison for violent and non-violent crimes.

He is now being held without bail on a series of charges related to other probation warrants, according to jail records.

They include charges of vehicle theft and possession of a firearm by a felon.
