Díaz-Canel visits the keys during the Tourism Fair

The Cuban ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel went to visit the northern keys of Ciego de Ávila and Camagüey in the context of the FIT Cuba-2024 Tourism Fair, which will be held in the country until next May 5.

The publication states that Díaz-Canel "toured the tourist and non-hotel facilities of that important tourist center."

The fair, the most important event of this sector on the island, was inaugurated on Thursday.

The regime claims that it is a "propitious opportunity to outline new strategies, joint businesses and learn about Cuban history, culture and traditions," when it tries to attract more than 3 million tourists this year.

In April it was reported that the first million of visitors in the fourth month of the year.

The Cuban bet is focused on attracting Russian nationals to the island.

According to an estimate, the arrival of 200,000 Russian tourists is expected this year, after the facilities with the use of MIR cards.

However, the country continues relegated when compared to popular destinations of the region, in 2023. The Dominican Republic received more than 6 million international tourists that year, consolidating itself as a leader in the industry in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, the city of Cancun in Mexico attracted more than 4 million visitors that year.

Despite this and the fact that the Cuban housing stock is in very poor conditions, the regime continues to prioritize investment in tourism and in the hotel industry.
