The pitcher Pedro Portuondo, from Santiago de Cuba, responded to the criticism received from fans after his performance in Wednesday's match against Matanzas.

Portuondo, who pitched only the first inning in which he allowed four runs, detailed all the deaths that have occurred in recent days - including that of his three-year-old niece - that have undoubtedly taken a toll on his spirit and performance.

"How easy it is to criticize a player..." he said in a message shared on Facebook, in which he assures that he does not try to justify his actions.

"None of you have the slightest idea of the sacrifice that playing baseball entails, or assuming certain responsibilities within such a great team with mine (Santiago). You just want to see a show regardless of anything else..." he said. .

Pedro recalled the recent death of his partner Daniel Colas, victim of an illness, news that shocked the people of Santiago and all baseball fans.

"You have no idea how many tears I have shed for him. Then we get the news about the father of other of my teammates, Yoel Yanqui. These are pains that are not easily overcome," he stressed.

"When we came back from that gray tour that we had for many reasonsWhen I entered the door of my house at night, the bad news also followed, because I only had to drop the briefcase and they informed me that one of my nieces had died. EPD my queen, at just three years old...", he explained.

The young pitcher stressed that despite all those blows without being able to get rid of that pain, he took on the challenge of playing and went out to give it his all like in his last outings in which he had done well, but on Wednesday things did not go well for him.

"Sometimes a baseball player or an athlete in general just needs support, not as much criticism and offense as you (Santiago fans) are used to giving to baseball players. Happy afternoon to everyone, as a good Santiago native that I am, because Santiago is champion," he concluded.
