A spectacular accident that occurred this Tuesday on the Vía Blanca in Havana left considerable damage to two cars, with no loss of life to be regretted.

A Mitsubishi pickup truck and a Soviet-made Volga collided at the intersection of Vía Blanca and San Benigno. Despite how dramatic the incident was, the injuries were not reported seriously.

“Tragic accident on Vía Blanca and San Benigno. I preferred not to take photos. Two accidents on the same block within a few days of each other. Prompt recovery for the injured,” indicated a user from the group of Facebook ‘Bus & Truck Accidents’.

Despite its alarming report, other users did publish photos of the incident at group and stated that it only caused injuries to the occupants of both vehicles. Several stressed the danger of said intersection, where similar accidents have occurred before.

“Hard accident… I passed by there a while ago and the two cars looked pretty ugly, although they are both state B-plate. It was a Volga and a truck, in my opinion Toyota brand. Apparently, the Volga car was going to join the Vía Blanca leaving the roundabout and the truck hit it,” said an Internet user who passed by the place.

Released in the 1970s from the plants of the Soviet manufacturer GAZ, the Volga model involved in the Vía Blanca accident is a GAZ-24, a “Volga” with a more modern body than the classic GAZ-21 (which also circulated in Cuba).

The vehicle is part of the fleet of the PUBLICENTRO Company, a marketing agency belonging to the Ministry of Transportation. In 2019, according to Radio Rails, this state company was “engaged in a new campaign to prevent road distractions.”
