Lázaro Martínez reached a distance of 17.10 meters this Sunday in the triple jump final of the Diamond League taking place in Rabat, Morocco, achieving his best jump of the year and setting a new record for the Moroccan event, according to sports media.

Without any prior participations in the previous events, the Cuban athlete won the gold medal, surpassing fellow Cuban and Portuguese nationalized Pedro Pablo Pichardo, who took second place with a jump of 16.92 meters, and Brazilian Almir Dos Santos, who secured the bronze with a jump of 16.90 meters.

This was a good result for Martínez, just two months ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

The Cuban representative is the current outdoor world runner-up, having won a silver medal behind Zango at the Budapest 2023 event, where his compatriot Cristian Nápoles finished third.

Both athletes, Martínez and Nápoles, have secured their tickets for the Paris Olympics. The young Andy Echavarría is also aiming to qualify for this event; he won the Cuba Athletics Cup this weekend with a distance of 17.11 meters, a mark that would have earned him the gold in Rabat.

The triple jump at the 2024 Paris Games is shaping up to be a highly competitive event. Joining Pichardo and Zango, who have dominated this event in recent years, as contenders for the podium is Lázaro Martínez, along with the previously mentioned Dos Santos and Andy Díaz, as well as the Cuban Jordan Díaz, who represents Spain.
