Lázaro Martínez stretched himself this Sunday to 17.10 meters in the final of the triple jump of the Diamond League taking place in Rabat, Morocco, achieving his best leap of the year and setting a new record for the Moroccan event, as reported by sports media.
Without previous participations in the previous stops, the Cuban athlete won the gold medal, surpassing the also Cuban naturalized Portuguese Pedro Pablo Pichardo (2nd with 16.92 meters) and the Brazilian Almir Dos Santos, who took the bronze with 16.90.
This was a good result for Martínez, just two months before the celebration of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The Cuban representative is the current outdoor world runner-up, thanks to his silver medal behind Zango at the Budapest 2023 event, where his compatriot Cristian Nápoles finished third.
Both athletes, Martínez and Nápoles, have secured a spot for the Olympic Games in Paris. The young Andy Echavarría also aims to qualify for this competition, who won the Cuba Athletics Cup this weekend with a distance of 17.11 meters, a mark that would have given him the gold in Rabat.
The triple jump event at Paris 2024 is shaping up to be a very competitive competition. Pichardo and Zango, who have dominated this event in recent years, are joined in their quest for the podium by Lázaro Martínez himself, as well as the aforementioned Dos Santos and Andy Díaz, and also Cuban athlete Jordan Díaz, who represents Spain.
