The fire that broke out on Saturday in the vicinity of the Hotel Nacional de Cuba continues to leave images on social networks, as well as doubts surrounding events that have barely been explained by the authorities and the official media of the Cuban regime.
A May 2023 report from the National Television News (NTV) celebrated that the Hotel Nacional had been awarded multiple times by the World Travel Awards as the Leading Hotel in Cuba for the excellence of the services it offers, and for the implementation of the fire safety plan, recognized by the Cuban Fire Department.
"Thirty years have passed since we last called the firefighters," acknowledged a member of the security team of the iconic Havana hotel, while highlighting the close collaboration with this Department, which visited the facilities every month to verify the reliability of their fire systems and protocols.
Precisely, what was described in the report on NTV contrasts with the events that took place last Saturday. The thick smoke that rose from the surroundings of the hotel and the chaotic images of the firefighters' team that went up in the opposite direction on O Street, as well as the delay in completely extinguishing the flames, cast doubt on the official information.
It also continues to be striking that the incident has not received deeper coverage from the official media of the Cuban regime.
The lack of transparency surrounding what happened at the iconic hotel in the capital raises doubts about the preparedness of Cuban hotel facilities for this type of incident, as well as about the authorities' intentions in not clarifying what occurred.
The explosion of the Hotel Saratoga in May 2022, a tragedy that cost 47 human lives, is still pending explanations and responsibilities, after the authorities of the regime promised a thorough investigation to determine the causes and consequences of the fateful event.
