The Cuban sports commentator Ángel Luis Fernández arrived in the United States as a beneficiary of the humanitarian parole program implemented by President Joe Biden's administration.
Official: Popular Cuban TV sports commentator starts a new life in the United States. My colleague and friend Ángel Luis Fernández has made the decision to start a new life in the United States of America after 25 years dedicated to sports journalism in Cuba," confirmed sports journalist Yasel Porto on his social media.
Fernández arrived in Miami a few days ago and was able to reunite with his parents and his eldest son "after a long period without being able to be with them," Porto stated in his post.
For a long period of time, he was one of the members of the team of narrators and commentators at Tele Rebelde, and he even participated in important events such as the 2012 London Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He was even slated to attend the French capital in the summer of 2024," he added.
According to Porto, Fernandez also worked as a presenter and host in cultural spaces such as "Gato Tuerto" and "Rosalía de Castro", and was in charge of the farewell ceremony at Juana Bacallao's funeral.
A recognized chess player, the media professional "was well known for being one of the main voices on Tele Rebelde in soccer, although he also covered other significant sports such as baseball, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and boxing."
The news generated an avalanche of comments on Porto's publication. "A great narrator and outstanding commentator. Respected and loved for his professionalism. Success wherever you are. Your humility, human quality, and education always characterize you," expressed an internet user.
With his departure, Fernández joins the Cuban migratory exodus of recent years, a flow that has brought more than half a million people to the United States in the last two years, of which 67,000 flew directly to US territory thanks to the humanitarian parole program (figures from January 2024).
In May, the sports narrator and commentator Ángel Andrés Hernández Vargas, better known as Andy Vargas, left the island and settled in the United States. According to Porto, Hernández Vargas was "claimed" by one of his two sons residing in Miami.
Born in Cojímar, Havana, Vargas was considered an emblematic voice of the COCO station, especially of the Industriales team.
All should come together and create a website where Cubans on the Island can enjoy MLB games narrated by you, and somehow reach us through Facebook or another site," suggested a user in the comments on Porto's recent post.
