Suspected sexual aggressor of teenager in Santiago de Cuba identified

The alleged aggressor resides in the La Asunción neighborhood.

In the last few hours, some details have come to light about the circumstances in which a teenage girl was raped in Santiago de Cuba on Tuesday night, as well as the alleged identity of the man arrested for the incident.

The alleged assailant has been identified as Reinier V. (Alias "Timba), as detailed by journalist Yosmany Mayeta this Thursday, who also specified that he lives in the La Asunción neighborhood and is around 30 years old.

As already anticipated, the man was out on a pass because he is serving a sentence for robbery and was sanctioned for rape years ago.

Regarding the circumstances in which the regrettable attack occurred, the source mentioned - quoting the testimony of a family member of the minor - that the teenager, who recently turned 15, was coming from a birthday party.

In the neighborhood, the power went out, and she was on her way home when that bastard was near the Gas Point in El Polvorín, where she was coming from, and he grabbed her with a knife to her neck and told her he would kill her if she screamed," the family source recounted.

Yasuris L. D., the mother of the affected minor, offered a brief statement to the reporter.

"The pain that my daughter and I are feeling, he must be experiencing it even worse. Everyone loves and takes care of my daughter. Imagine that she has been operated on her heart since she was five years old, and she is a good and obedient child, very attached to me and her brother, who lives with us," explained the mother of the victim.

"I just ask that the full weight of the law falls on him," added the woman.

A video published this Wednesday by Mayeta Labrada showed the tense moments that were experienced when Reinier V. was arrested in El Polvorín, as the alleged perpetrator of the rape of the teenager.

The images that were broadcast allowed us to see how the number of neighbors at the location multiplied in a few seconds, just before the individual was put into a police car.

Although it was not clearly seen in the video, apparently some of those present ended up hitting the individual as he was being taken to get into the patrol car, which led the police to fire some shots into the air to disperse the crowd and prevent a possible lynching.

The gunshots caused many people to run away scared in various directions.

A later post from the pro-government Facebook profile "Héroes del Moncada" justified the police action and the shots fired into the air "to disperse the residents who rushed at the detainee with the intention of attacking him."

"Despite being a deplorable fact, Cuba is a state of law and the Ministry of the Interior will always act to protect the lives of all its citizens, ensuring compliance with the law and due process," the official source stated regarding the incident, which occurred around eight in the morning on June 5th.

This is not the first time that residents of Santiago de Cuba have confronted authorities in an attempt to take justice into their own hands in a case of rape.

In February 2020, residents of Santiago de Cuba clashed with the police using stones in an attempt to lynch the rapist of an eight-year-old girl. In this case, at the entrance of a house, the alleged aggressor was beaten up and had objects thrown at his face, while being protected by several police officers who also fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd.
