Triple crash in busy area of Havana leaves no injuries

A vehicle from the Operational Guard of the Ministry of the Interior was the cause of the triple accident, which also involved one of the so-called "gazelles" (public transportation taxis) and another car of the Lada brand.

No victims were reported in a crash involving three vehicles on the busy Reina street near the intersection with Galiano, in Central Havana, that occurred this Saturday.

An Operational Guard car from the Ministry of the Interior was responsible for the triple accident, which also involved one of the so-called "gazelles" (route taxis) of public transportation in Havana and another Lada car.

According to the author of a publication in the Facebook group "Accidents Buses & Trucks for more experience and fewer victims!", the MININT vehicle had a front tire blowout after the rim hit the pavement, causing the steering to break, veering towards the "gazelle", and colliding with it.

At the same time, the military car was hit by a Lada that was driving near the bus route.

The report of the accident sparked quite a few humorous comments speculating on who would bear the responsibility for the crash, as a police car was involved.

However, beyond the jokes and sarcasm, several opinions pointed to the poor state of the automotive fleet in Cuba, both state-owned and private, due to the lack of spare parts that would allow vehicles to be maintained in optimal conditions.

Some criticized that precisely the drivers of military organization vehicles "think they are superheroes", do not pass the mandatory technical inspection (the so-called 'somatón'), and are "the ones who most violate traffic laws" in the country.

Other users expressed concern about the speed at which the MININT car was traveling along that busy street, especially regarding the damages suffered by the "gacela," which would stop providing service to the population in the midst of the transportation crisis in the capital.

An article in the official newspaper Tribuna de La Habana in May highlighted the decrease in traffic accidents and in the number of fatalities and injuries in these incidents - 214, 31, and 18, respectively - in the capital, during the first quarter of the year compared to the initial three months of 2023.

The previous week, a serious accident occurred in Camajuaní, Villa Clara, causing the death of one person and injuries to 26 others, all Canadian tourists traveling from Cayo Santamaría to Abel Santamaría International Airport on a Transgaviota bus.

During the previous year, the country recorded 8,556 traffic accidents, as a result of which 729 people died and 5,938 were injured.
