Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Tuesday a salary increase for teachers in the state.
Gathered at a school in Hialeah with several members of his cabinet and teachers, DeSantis reported on this increase of 1.25 million dollars in the budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025.
In Florida, we value good educators and want to reward their hard work in the classroom. That's why I signed the wage protection law, provided new opportunities for teachers to receive bonuses, and made historic investments to increase teacher salaries," the governor wrote on his X social media account.
According to Telemundo 51, this raise in salary for Florida teachers represents almost $10,000.
Data from the governor's office support the importance of this increase, as during the 2023-2024 school year, the average starting salary for teachers in Florida was $48,000, while the overall average salary exceeded $54,000.
"Since I took office, we have significantly increased the starting salary of teachers, and Florida now has the highest starting teacher salary in the region," said DeSantis in X.
In 2020, the governor signed the so-called HB 641, a bill that allocated 400 million dollars to increase the minimum salary of teachers and 100 million to increase the salary of veteran teachers and other instructional staff such as librarians and counselors.
With that increase for teachers, the average salary in Florida went from 26th to fifth place in the United States.
