Following the voracious fire that displaced over 40 residents of the Temple Court apartment complex in the city of Miami last week, including several Cubans, and due to the danger of collapse being declared, specialized groups demolished the building this Tuesday.
Located at 431 NW 3 Street, the building was partially destroyed, and county authorities decided that the structure posed an imminent risk of collapse. The former residents were unable to recover their personal belongings.
Several of the displaced individuals are staying at Motel 6, which has been turned into their temporary home while they wait for permanent housing to become available, as reported by the Local 10 News website.
Among those affected was the Cuban singer María Antonieta Fernández, who said she lost everything in the incident. "I am really very nervous, very worried," she commented in an interview with journalist Ninoska Pérez for the radio station La Nueva Poderosa, while the building was still being consumed by the flames.
"I practically lost all my belongings there," stated Joel Enrique, another resident. "I just need a minute… not these minutes," he repeated in statements to CBS News.
The incident left, as another noteworthy detail, the presence of a person who had been shot at the entrance of the building. Hours later, it was revealed that the individual was Feder-One Biotte, a 30-year-old maintenance employee of the apartment complex.
Finally, the police arrested Juan Francisco Figueroa, 73 years old, who was transferred to the TGK jail in Miami-Dade as a suspect in the shooting of the building's employee and later setting the property on fire.
Figueroa, who is facing charges of attempted murder with a firearm, felony, and arson, acknowledged what he had done and "stated that he expected to be in prison for the rest of his life," according to the arrest report.
