Motor scooters have become popular in recent years among Cubans, who acquire them to try to alleviate the effects of the transportation crisis in the country. However, lithium battery explosions in these vehicles have caused hundreds of fatal incidents.

Precisely, the most recent tragedy has unfolded a few days before the first anniversary of the tragic event that plunged a Havana family into mourning. In the early hours of June 28, 2023, seven people, including two young children, died in the fire caused by the explosion of several electric motorcycles in a house in Centro Havana.

At the beginning of this month, a couple and their 21-year-old son died in Playa, after a fire broke out in their home, allegedly due to the explosion of an electric motorcycle.

According to official data, from 2019 to mid-2023, more than 3,000 fires of this type were recorded and extinguished by firefighters, in which about 200 people died or were injured, as well as reporting significant material losses.
