A recording circulating on social media confirms in the voice of Cuban actor Carlos Massola the agony he experienced in the hours leading up to his death.
In what appears to be a WhatsApp audio message that he sent to a very close person when he thought he was feeling better, Massola attributed the origin of his discomfort to having eaten "some pizzas."
“I vomited blood, I had an episode because of some pizzas I ate from down there, because everything there is made up, made up. So I started feeling like vomiting and couldn't vomit. The problem is that I had stomach surgery, it irritated the mucosa and I spent a whole day trying to vomit, with dry heaving and dry heaving and nothing would come out,” the actor explained.
Massola then explained that in the early morning he fell to the ground and had diarrhea as if with a "sangrasa." This was followed by several episodes of vomiting. He explained that he even fell and remained on the ground for hours unable to get up.
"I started vomiting and vomiting. The last vomit was yesterday at 11 at night, it was already a black liquid, that's when the vomiting and diarrhea stopped," he described.
"When I started feeling better, I sat down on the bed all messed up, what am I going to do, I couldn't even shower because I'm afraid to stand up and fall again," added Carlos Massola in a chilling testimony, who detailed that "the surgeon," whom he apparently consulted over the phone, instructed him to take metronidazole.
"I'm feeling better, but I'm afraid to stand up because I will fall to the ground again and there's no one here to help me up," concluded the actor.
The description of the events matches the information provided on social media by your friend Fabio Corchado Borroto.
"He had several episodes of vomiting and bloody diarrhea. He fell off the bed and remained unconscious all through the early morning. He called me in the morning asking for metronidazole, but didn't want to go to the doctor at that time, today he woke up lifeless," wrote Corchado Borroto in a Facebook post announcing Massola's death.
Gladys Escandell Pérez, the mother of the deceased, spoke with Cubanet and stated that her son spent four days locked in his room without allowing anyone to enter or receive medical attention.
According to her account, Massola was feeling unwell and refused any assistance, even from her, who allegedly tried to convince him to see a doctor.
"Because I didn't want to upset him, I didn't open the room for him. I told him from the door that he needed to go to the doctor, but he refused," said the woman, who appreciated the displays of solidarity but also criticized the misinformation surrounding her son's death.
"He didn't think it was that serious and believed he would heal on his own. He didn't want to go to the doctor because he said there were no resources at the hospital," he explained.
Massola's mother stated that her son had been weak, vomiting, and defecating blood for days due to preexisting conditions, and that it was his own decision not to seek medical help.
The mortal remains of Carlos Massola were cremated, as was his wish. After waiting for the funeral car for seven hours, around four o'clock in the afternoon last Wednesday, the artist's body was removed from his residence in the Cerro municipality with the help of firefighters and taken to the Bernardo García funeral home, located on Zanja Street.
The family doctor determined that Massola died from hypovolemic shock, which is "an emergency condition in which severe blood loss or other fluid loss makes the heart unable to pump enough blood to the body," and can cause many organs to stop functioning.
The death of actor Carlos Massola, who in recent years raised his voice numerous times against the Cuban government, was completely ignored by the authorities of Culture on the island. Not a single official Cuban cultural institution echoed the actor's passing on their social media profiles, which has been strongly criticized by thousands of Cubans, including some who are aligned with the government like the singer Cándido Fabré.
Despite the silence in official circles, Massola has not lacked recognition and the spontaneous homage of many of his colleagues, nor the affection of the people, who have appreciated the courage the actor showed in expressing his political ideas without censorship or euphemisms.
Carlos Massola died while waiting for a humanitarian parole that would allow him to leave Cuba and fight for a better life.
