A 16-year-old Cuban athlete dies of a heart attack days after competing in the National School Games.

The young judoka was deaf and mute, orphaned from her mother, and lived with her grandmother in the Boniato neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba.

A 16-year-old athlete died of a heart attack this Wednesday in Santiago de Cuba, three days after competing in the National School Games, which took place in Pinar del Río.

The teenager's name was María de Jesús (Jesusa) Mora and she practiced judo.

According to the independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada detailed on Facebook, she was deaf-mute, orphaned by her mother, and lived with her grandmother in Granja José Martí, in the Boniato neighborhood.

"Unfortunately, she suffered a heart attack this morning at her boyfriend's house," a source revealed.

The news has shocked the neighborhood.

"Her grandmother is devastated, and Jesusa was a beloved girl by all of us," he added.

Dozens of internet users have expressed their pain over the unexpected death of a young girl who was just beginning to live.

"I am so sorry, she was my student at the Provincial School of Physical Education (EPEF). Please convey my deepest condolences to her family," said Yunelkis Ávila Salazar.
