An American Airlines plane tire catches fire during takeoff in Tampa.

The tire caught fire as the plane gained speed on the runway, moments before taking off this Wednesday.

A tire from an American Airlines plane caught fire this Wednesday at Tampa International Airport in Florida, while the aircraft was gaining speed on the runway for takeoff.

The flight, bound for Phoenix, Arizona, was carrying 174 passengers and six crew members on board. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Impactful images that have gone viral on social media show the moment when, as the plane was moving along the runway - a Boeing 737-800 - a fireball is seen in one of the tires.

The video, recorded by Captain Steven Markovich, shows his surprise at the incident.

The complete seven-minute video shows the arrival of several emergency trucks from Tampa International Airport to the aircraft, ensuring the safety of the plane and its occupants.

American Airlines acknowledged that there was a mechanical issue with American Airlines flight 590 from Tampa to Phoenix while it was on the runway, but did not specify what caused the incident.

American Airlines Flight 590, with service from Tampa (TPA) to Phoenix (PHX), experienced a mechanical issue on the runway before takeoff," the airline wrote in a statement.

The customers disembarked safely and were transported by bus to the terminal. "We do not want to interrupt our customers' travel plans and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused," they added without further explanations about what happened.
