A police officer from out of town shot and killed an individual on Tuesday afternoon about a mile from the site of the Republican National Convention (RNC), where former President Donald Trump is participating, according to two local law enforcement sources.
The shooting took place amidst heightened security at the presidential convention, following the shocking assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump last Saturday during a rally in Pennsylvania.
Brian Steel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Capitol City Lodge No. 9 in Columbus, Ohio, confirmed that the Columbus police were involved in a shooting in Milwaukee, according to a report by USA Today.
There was no immediate information on whether the shooting was connected to the RNC event, and the identity of the victim, who was a well-known person in the neighborhood according to witnesses' accounts to the Journal Sentinel, has not been officially released.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office reported that an adult man was murdered.
The incident took place near North 14th and West Vliet streets, outside the security perimeter of the RNC, said Milwaukee police sources, who requested anonymity as they were not authorized to comment on the ongoing investigation.
The police forces have cordoned off several blocks in the area, which is near King Park.
Scenes of Columbus officers are in Milwaukee, along with officers from cities across the country, to support security at the Convention, where Trump was ratified as the Republican candidate for the upcoming November presidential elections.
Hundreds of thousands of Republicans have gathered in Milwaukee for the national convention, where the former president arrived with his ear bandaged after being shot on Saturday.
Apparently, the assassination attempt against Trump has given him a significant political boost that he is taking advantage of.
At the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, the former president listened to about an hour of speeches on Monday while sitting next to his running mate and vice presidential candidate, Ohio Senator JD Vance.
Trump made the announcement that Vance would be on the November ballot just hours before the start of the convention. He also had the Cuban-American Marco Rubio among his prospects.
