The Republican senator James David Vance (J.D. Vance) was chosen as the vice presidential candidate for the United States by the Republican Party, on the ticket headed by Donald Trump.
Vance is known for his unwavering support of the former president's policies and his advocacy for the working class, but he did not always hold this position; a few years ago, he was highly critical of Trump.
Who is J.D. Vance?
The senator was born in Middleton, Ohio, on August 2, 1984, and will soon turn 40. Between 2003 and 2007, he served as a marine in the Iraq War. After finishing his time in the military, he focused on studying political science and philosophy at Ohio State University and Yale Law School.
He then began his career at a prestigious law firm before advancing to the position of director at the investment fund of magnate Peter Thiel, located in San Francisco.
He also has a sensitive side for literature and art, and he is a great communicator. He became famous in 2016 with the publication of his book "Hillbilly Elegy", in which he recounts his life in the Rust Belt, a region marked by poverty and drugs in the United States.
At that time, he gave an interview where he described Trump as a "terrible candidate" but over time, he fully embraced the political vision of the Republican leader, especially his "America First" approach, and became one of the most influential figures within the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement.
J.D. Vance is married to the litigator and former court secretary Usha Chilukuri Vance, who on Monday requested a leave of absence from the law firm where she worked to prepare for and face the changes coming in her family's life. They have three young children.
J.D. Vance, a self-made politician
The vice presidential candidate is new to the world of American politics. He was elected senator from Ohio in 2022. During his Senate campaign, he gained Trump’s support by embracing his populist views on immigration and foreign policy.
As a senator, he has demonstrated his conservative stance, particularly with his opposition to the legalization of abortion in cases of rape or incest. He also rejects gender-affirming policies for minors.
Vance's selection as Trump’s running mate sends a clear message about the future the former president envisions for his second term.
The senator from Ohio positions himself as a defender of the working class and a critic of the liberal elite, complementing Trump's rhetoric of fighting against the "Deep State" in Washington.
During his first term, Trump attempted to push this fight forward, but he faced resistance due to a lack of support within his own administration. With Vance, he seems to have found an ally willing to go all the way with his agenda.
It is believed that in the current campaign for the presidency of the U.S., Vance could help Trump win key states like Michigan and Wisconsin, which share demographic and economic characteristics with Ohio.
His ability to convincingly express Trump's "America First" vision could be crucial in debates and in mobilizing voters.
J.D. Vance's selection as a vice presidential candidate highlights Trump's strategy to rejuvenate the Republican ticket and strengthen his base with figures committed to his radical vision.
