A violent incident shook Miami International Airport when a man stabbed a woman several times, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of people as a precautionary measure.
The attack occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday on the fourth floor of Terminal J, outside the secure area of the airport.
According to Detective Angel Rodríguez, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade police department, the attacker not only stabbed the woman but also tried to push her over a railing. However, the victim managed to escape badly injured and seek help.
The woman, whose identity has not been revealed, was found on the third floor by police officers who quickly responded to the emergency call.
The victim, who suffered multiple stab wounds, was taken to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Authorities have described the incident as "an unprovoked altercation," although the police have not yet confirmed whether the two individuals knew each other.
The suspect was arrested without incident at the scene, and the weapon used in the attack was recovered. The attacker has been identified as Alexander Paul Love, who now faces charges of attempted murder.
Evacuation of Miami International Airport
The attack caused initial confusion when some witnesses thought there was an active shooter at the scene.
When the police arrived, some people got confused and thought there was someone with a gun.
That confusion led to a brief interruption in the airport operations until the officials determined that no firearm was involved.
Despite the fact that the attack occurred outside the airport's safe zone, the authorities decided to evacuate all passengers in terminals J and H as a precautionary measure.
The passengers were subjected to a new inspection before being allowed to resume their activities.
A spokesperson for the airport reported that the evacuation was carried out to ensure the safety of all those present and to allow investigators to do their work without interference.
The detectives are working to determine the relationship between the suspect and the woman, as the motive for the attack is unclear.
The police are also reviewing the airport's security cameras and interviewing witnesses to gather more details about the incident. It has not been confirmed whether the man and woman were passengers.
The attack and the subsequent evacuation caused delays in flights and inconveniences for many passengers. However, airport authorities and the Miami-Dade police assured that the safety of passengers and staff is their top priority.
"We are working closely with the police to ensure that the airport is safe and to minimize disruptions to operations," said an airport spokesperson.
