A Cuban migrant assaulted a cellphone store in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, and stole 80 phones, after allegedly intimidating an employee of the establishment with a firearm and locking her in a storage room.
The suspect acted alone in the robbery of the Macropay store, located on Himno Nacional street in the center of Tizayuca municipality, according to news portals that released a photo of the individual captured by the store's security camera.
Preliminary reports indicated that the Cuban migrant arrived at the establishment and pretended to be a customer, after which he allegedly threatened the employee with a firearm and forced her to open the storage area, from which he stole about 80 mobile phones.
The subject locked the clerk inside and fled “with a large bag of flowers,” where he took the phones, reported the site Conectados IM.
According to the report, the employee managed to leave the warehouse and notify the Municipal Police, whose officers began searching for the thief in the vicinity of the area, but they were unable to find him.
So far, the police are continuing the search for the fugitive through the surveillance cameras in Tizayuca.
In February of last year, two young Cubans were arrested in Mexico City after being caught by the police in an attempt to steal several items from a supermarket.
The Yucatán State Police arrested a Cuban in June who injured an employee of the Federal Electricity Commission with a knife, after an argument between the two in a store in the city of Progreso.
In recent years, the presence of Cuban migrants in Mexico has increased, most of whom stay temporarily in that country while trying to reach the border with the United States to seek asylum.
According to statistics from the National Migration Institute (INM), 27,404 Cubans in irregular status were detected in Mexico during the first five months of the year.
From January to June 2024, 8,833 Cubans with irregular immigration status sought protection from Mexican authorities during their journey to the U.S., reported the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR).
From 2019 until June of this year, 68,188 Cubans arrived in Mexican territory and requested refugee status.
