One police officer is dead and another is injured as the main outcome of a shooting that occurred in Mexico, right in front of the hotel where the Cuban under-20 football team is staying for the Concacaf pre-world championship.

The incident happened this Wednesday before 9:00 am in front of the renowned Hotel Casa Inn Celaya Veleros in the city of Celaya, one of the venues for the event.

According to the newspaper Correo, from the state of Guanajuato, elements of the General Directorate of Transit and Traffic Police were conducting surveillance at the hotel before picking up the athletes and taking them to the stadium where the tournament is taking place. While waiting in the parking lot, they were shot at from several points by heavily armed individuals who fled on a motorcycle.

Despite repelling the attack, two officers were injured, one of them critically. They were taken immediately to the hospital, but shortly after, it was reported that one of them, named Franco, had died.

Members of the Municipal Police, the National Guard, and the Mexican Army arrived and set up a perimeter fence at the scene to secure the evidence.

It was reported that the bursts impacted two vehicles of the Traffic Police, as well as a bus that would transport the athletes.

At this moment, the operation to capture the assailants continues.

Celaya is the most dangerous municipality for police officers in Guanajuato. So far this year, 18 have been murdered, out of a total of 40 officers killed across the state.
