The cause of death of Cuban journalist Magda Iris Chiroldes López, who passed away this Wednesday at the age of 33, was allegedly dengue, according to 14ymedio citing a hospital source.

Chiroldes López, who served as the head of the news department of the Caribbean Channel of Cuban television, died while waiting to be attended to in the emergency room of the Freyre de Andrade Clinical Surgical Hospital (Emergencies) in the Centro Habana municipality.

“She arrived on her own, accompanied by her parents. She felt unwell and deteriorated rapidly. I had never seen a case like this, it happened so quickly that she wasn’t even hospitalized; everything occurred in the waiting room,” revealed a medical source to the cited outlet under the condition of anonymity.

The doctor noted that the young woman was aware of the situation as her symptoms worsened: discomfort, fatigue, body pain, and high fever.

"The girl was screaming that she didn't want to die. The parents are devastated," concluded the witness.

The mortal remains of Magda Iris Chiroldes López were briefly laid in wake on the morning of this Thursday at the funeral home on Calzada and K, in El Vedado, before being transferred to her hometown of Pinar del Río.

The burial is scheduled to take place in the afternoon of this same July 25th.

Before taking on responsibilities at Canal Caribe, the journalist worked at Periódico Guerrillero, in Pinar del Río, and at the magazine Juventud Técnica.

Although the three outlets published condolences, it was overwhelmingly the publication from the Pinar del Río newspaper that was the most heartfelt.

"And since understanding is a human obsession, questions begin to pile up about how, why, when, but the answers do not clarify anything, because death is absurd when it takes a young body with a good soul," the obituary in the Pinar newspaper reported.

In recent hours, a large number of colleagues and friends of the young journalist have expressed dismay and sadness over the premature death of Magda Iris Chiroldes López.

Neither the brief note published in Cubadebate nor the obituaries from the media outlets with which she was professionally associated mentioned the cause of death.
