Emotional tribute to truck driver who died in tragic accident in Ciego de Ávila

The deceased truck driver had many years of experience behind the wheel.

Friends and colleagues of a truck driver who died on Wednesday night in a tragic traffic accident in the province of Ciego de Ávila, in which two people died and several were injured, paid a heartfelt tribute to say goodbye to him.

Two videos posted on social media show how both last night and this morning, numerous truck drivers honked their horns in tribute to Hugo Triao - known as "Jugo" - whose death has caused deep sorrow among his professional colleagues in Santiago de Cuba.

The vehicle was from Mayarí Arriba, in the Segundo Frente municipality, where the victim also apparently resided.

The causes of the accident are not entirely clear, although various reports on social media reveal that a tire came off the vehicle.

Numerous colleagues of the truck driver emphasized that he was an experienced driver and lament the incident.

In the other car involved in the accident, there was a couple and their child. The woman passed away, but her husband and the child survived.

Regarding the driver who was accompanying the deceased driver in the truck, reports indicate that he is injured.

What is not clear is the number of people who were traveling in the passenger truck.

The harrowing images published showed that the red truck crashed with such force into a tree that, according to witnesses, it took firefighters many hours to pull the deceased victim from the cabin.

In recent weeks, a growing number of serious accidents have been reported across the country, many of them with fatal outcomes.

However, although the population perceives an increase in traffic accidents in recent months, Cuban authorities stated at the beginning of this month that in the first half of 2024, there were 543 fewer road incidents registered in the country than in the same period of the previous year.
