The United States has a new beauty queen. She is Alma Cooper, a 22-year-old Afro-Latina from Michigan, an officer in the United States Army and a graduate in Mathematics from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Additionally, she is currently pursuing a master's degree in Statistics at Stanford.
The coronation of Alma Cooper occurs in a year in which the Miss USA pageant has been filled with controversies following Noelia Voight's resignation earlier in the year to prioritize her mental health.
The 22-year-old young woman is the first active-duty soldier to receive the title of Miss USA, marking a milestone in the history of the pageant.
The coronation took place at an event held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, where Alma Cooper triumphed over Connor Perry, the representative from Kentucky, and Danika Christopherson, Miss Oklahoma.
Alma impressed the judges not only with her beauty but also with her intelligence and humble origins. The daughter of a immigrant worker, she emphasized the importance of personal excellence and hard work, pointing out that circumstances do not define a person's destiny.
"As the daughter of an immigrant worker, a proud Afro-Latina woman, and a U.S. Army officer, I am living the American dream," she said during her participation in Miss USA.
The U.S. Army officer will compete in November at Miss Universe 2024, the pageant in which Cuba will return to participate after 57 years without competing. Twenty-four young Cuban women aspire to be the representative of the island in the beauty pageant, but it will not be until a few weeks from now that we will know who will finally wear the crown to represent at Miss Universe.
