U.S. Embassy in Cuba expands its visa services

The U.S. Embassy in Havana will diversify temporary work visas and exchange programs, but they warn that those for tourism and business are not being expanded.

The United States Embassy in Cuba announced a significant expansion of its consular services, focusing on visa issuance.

Starting from August 19, Cuban citizens who have temporary work requests approved by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), as well as those participating in exchange programs with an approved Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status, will be able to schedule their visa interviews at the diplomatic headquarters.

This important change responds to the growing demand for consular services, facilitating access for Cubans to job and educational opportunities in the United States.

However, the embassy has emphasized that this extension does not include B-1 business visas or B-2 tourist visas, which remain unavailable through its office in Havana.

This movement is part of the embassy's ongoing effort to strengthen ties between both countries while providing legal ways for Cubans to access new opportunities in the United States.

The diplomatic mission invited Cubans interested in obtaining more details about the specific visa categories to consult the official website of the United States Embassy in Cuba.

In August 2023, the United States government reopened its USCIS office in Cuba after nearly five years of being closed. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been developing a comprehensive communication program informing about its services on the island since then.

A few days ago, Kristina Rosales, spokesperson for the State Department, urged not to believe rumors about U.S. immigration laws and to seek reliable information through official channels.

"Get accurate and reliable updates directly from us. Learn about the legal ways to enter the United States safely," said Rosales.

The American spokesperson invited Cubans who wish to emigrate to subscribe to the WhatsApp channel "Migración USA," where the diplomatic mission shares updated information and specific guidelines about the consular services they offer.
