The young Cuban Dargis Vargas Ferrer is recovering well in a hospital in Santiago de Cuba, after being brutally attacked by her ex-husband in front of their young daughter.

The attack occurred on Monday in the Petrocasas neighborhood, in the Abel Santamaría Urban Center, where the 28-year-old woman lived with her daughter.

According to Dargis's aunt, who has been following his recovery, the young woman has started to take some steps and can now eat food.

"There are many wounds, she is completely destroyed, in her arms, legs, head, face, he tried to kill her or leave her disabled for life," said the woman in statements to local reporter Yosmany Mayeta.

Dargis is currently hospitalized at the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital, where the doctors have given a hopeful diagnosis to the family, said a close associate. "We just have to wait to see how she evolves," he mentioned.

The attacker, identified as Alberto Pérez Masso, assaulted the young woman in front of her small child, shocking the residents of his neighborhood who wanted to take justice into their own hands.

The attacker, who was on a "prison leave" despite being incarcerated for another crime, was surrounded by patrol cars after assaulting the woman.

The man hid in the building while a crowd waited outside to seek justice. The police had to escort him out of the place.

In July, a young man attacked his mother and his wife with a machete in Santiago de Cuba, and they had to be urgently transferred to the Military Hospital.
